Where found

Dry forest, woodland, open areas, and rocky slopes.

subsp. macrorhyncha:  Tablelands, ACT and Western Slopes. Occasionally Kosciuszko National Park.

subsp. cannonii:  Just north of the area covered by this key, from west of Wollemi National Park to Turon State Forest north east of Bathurst. One record (2016) about halfway between Mittagong and Taralga.

Notes

Tree to 35 m tall.  Bark stringy on all but the smallest branches or throughout, often deeply furrowed, grey, grey-brown, red-brown, or dark brown.  Juvenile stems rounded in cross section, rough at first. Juvenile leaves opposite each other for a few pairs then alternating up the stems, 2.5-11 cm long, 20-55 mm wide, sometimes stalkless at first, glossy, green to blue-green, rough for up to 14 nodes.  Adult leaves alternating up the stems, 7-15 cm long, 12-38  mm wide, glossy or dull, green.  Flowers white, with 0 petals.  Flower clusters 5-12 flowered, usually in single clusters at the base of the leaves, but occasionally forming large compound clusters at the ends of the branchlets.  Mature flower buds 5–12 mm long, caps at least as long as the base.  Flowers Summer-Winter.  Gumnuts 6-16 mm in diameter. Gumnuts that have dropped their seed have strongly protruding valves

subsp. cannonii (Eucalyptus cannonii in PlantNET):  Mature flower buds 8-12 mm long.  Caps more or less angular.  Gumnuts 10-16 mm diameter.

subsp. macrorhyncha:  Mature flower buds 5-9 mm long. Caps conical, elongated and pointed, or beaked.  Gumnuts 6-12 mm in diameter.

Hybridises with Eucalyptus dives and Eucalyptus rossii.
