Where found

Forest. Southern Highlands and the ranges north from the Southern Highlands. Coastal and Sydney area inland from the coast, north from Jervis Bay.

Notes

Tree to 45 m tall.  Bark rough on all but the smallest branches or throughout.  Rough bark stringy or fibrous,  in long flat strips with shallow fissures in between, grey or grey-brown to red-brown.  Juvenile stems round or square in cross section.  Juvenile leaves opposite each other for about 4 to 6 pairs, then alternating up the stems, 6.5-15.5 cm long, 17-45 mm wide, dull, green, upper and lower surfaces different colours.  Adult leaves alternating up the stems, 7-18 cm long, 14-40 mm wide, glossy, green, darker green above.  Flowers white, with 0 petals.  Flower clusters 7-11+ flowered.  Mature flower buds 10-16 mm long, caps much longer than the base.  Flowers Spring-Summer.  Gumnuts 5-10 mm in diameter. Gumnuts that have dropped their seed have strongly protruding valves

Intergrading populations with Eucalyptus notabilis occur in the area from Colo Heights to Dural (Central Coast), these have been known as Eucalyptus sp. Cattai and Eucalyptus sp. Cattai (Gregson s.n., 28 Aug. 1954).

Hybrids are recorded with Eucalyptus parramattensis subsp. parramattensis.
