Where found

Forest, woodland, wet heath, grassy areas, stony slopes, along streams, moist sites, and swamps. Widespread. Rarely coastal.

Notes

Shrub to 2 m high. Leaves sharp pointed. New growth appressed hairy, becoming hairless by the time of flowering, darkening with age. Leaves alternating up the stems, 0.9–14 cm long, 1-3.5 mm wide, cylindrical to more or less flat, veins obscure, with a mucro 1-3.5 mm long. Flowers white to cream, with 4 'petals' free from each other when the flowers are fully open, hairless. Gynoecium 6–10 mm long. Flowers in clusters of 6–40. Flowering: spring to summer. 'Nuts' slender, 11–27 mm long, 5–9 mm wide, smooth or wrinkled, more or less rounded at the top, with a small protuberance near top of each valve. 'Nuts' opening widely before the next flowering season. Seeds with one wing.
