Where found

Open forest, woodland, grassy areas, roadsides and other open sites, seasonally damp mossy ledges, and near streams and dams. Widespread. Rare on the coast and ranges.

Notes

Annual herb to 0.5 m tall, single- or few-stemmed, usually hairy with coarse, moderately stiff hairs. Leavesr clustered or opposite each other on the lower stems, alternating up the stems higher up, sometimes alternating up the stems throughout, 0.1-4 cm long, 0.2-11 mm wide, margins flat or wavy, entire or sometimes toothed. Leaves on the lower stems often withering early. Flowers blue to mauve, sometimes white or pink, 3 mm or more in diameter, tubular, with 5 lobes (sometimes 3 or 4), each 0.5-6 mm long. Free lobes of the flowers less than twice as long as the tube. Flowers in clusters, sometimes single. Flowers Winter to Summer.
