Description

Rhizome short-creeping; apices densely covered in ovate scales. Stipe 5–22 cm long, 0.5–1.5 mm diam.; stipe and rachis yellowish brown, darker at base, densely covered in spreading multiseptate fawn hairs, to 3.5 mm long. Lamina 3–4-pinnate at base, ovate, 10–25 cm long, 5–16 cm wide; upper and lower surfaces dark green and sparsely hairy along veins and midribs. Primary pinnae in 15–25 pairs, shortly stalked; longest 3.5–9 cm long, 15–40 mm wide, arising at wide angles; midribs winged. Longest secondary pinnae 10–30 mm long, 4–10 mm wide, stalked. Longest tertiary pinnae 4–8 mm long, 3–5 mm wide, stalked, sometimes divided into quaternary pinnae. Ultimate pinnules narrowly elliptic or obovate. Sori ±round, with paraphyses; terminating veins in upper part of ultimate segments; protected by reniform indusia attached at their bases and opening towards segment apices. Spores monolete, echinate.

Distribution

Endemic to the Atherton, Carbine and Windsor Tablelands and surrounding mountains of NE QLD.

Habit and habitat

Terrestrial and on rocks, often in creek beds in higher-altitude rainforest.
