Perennial herb to 0.7 m high or sprawling. Hairless. Leaves with sharp tips. Basal leaf sheaths fleshy. Leaves crowded at the base of the plant in dense fan-shaped clusters, compound, 10–30 cm long (including the 6–16 cm long sheathing bases), 40–90 mm wide. Leaflets 2–4 cm long, linear, with long drawn out tips. Male and female flowers on different plants. Flowers white or cream to greenish, 2.5–3 mm in diameter, with 5 petals, in many-flowered clusters. Flowers summer.
