Shrub mostly to about 4 m high. Leaves alternating up the stems, 3–10 cm long, 15–50 mm wide, leathery, margins entire. Flowers fragrant, white, 4–6 mm long, tubular, with 5 lobes, in 10–30-flowered clusters. Seed case dry.
Often occurs with Avicennia marina but extends farther upstream and more inland than that species.
