Dry forest margins, urban woodland, old gardens, roadsides, other disturbed areas, and exposed sandstone cliff ledges. Spreads quickly down drainage lines. Coast, ranges, and the eastern edge of the tablelands north from west of Jervis Bay.
Introduced perennial herb to 1.2 m tall, rhizomatous. Flower stalks cylindrical, hairless. Leaves basal, 20-80 cm long, 30-50 mm wide, glossy, relatively thick, somewhat fleshy or leathery, veins running lengthwise. Flowers about 40 mm long, tubular, with 6 blue to mauve, or occasionally white, 'petals' each 40-45 mm long, fused at the base. Flowers in many-flowered clusters. Flowers Spring to Summer.
