Forest, grassy areas, roadsides, disturbed damp sites, gullies, and along streams. Coast and ranges north from Jervis Bay.
Introduced perennial herb or shrub to 1 m tall, sometimes sprawling. Roots at the nodes. Stems sparsely hairy, often reddish or purplish. Leaves opposite each other, 3-15 cm long, 8-30 mm wide, hairy, tips pointed. Flower heads 5-6 mm in diameter, white, with several florets and 0 'petals', in crowded clusters. Flowers Winter to Spring.
