Forest, woodland, grassy areas, alpine herbfields, roadsides, disturbed sites, and rocky areas. Widespread.
Perennial herb to 0.5 m tall or prostrate, somewhat scented. Stems square in cross section, hairy. Leaves basal and opposite each other, 3-15 cm long, 6-40 mm wide, sparsely to densely hairy, margins toothed, scalloped, or lobed, the upper leaves sometimes entire, tips blunt. Flowers about 5-22 mm long, blue to purple or violet, rarely pinkish, tubular, with 2 lips, the upper lip inconspicuous, the lower lip with 3 lobes, the middle lobe of the 3 often notched. Flowers in loose whorls of 6-20. Flowers most of the year, mostly Spring.
