Tree or shrub to 7 m high. Leaf margins with spine-tipped teeth at the tips of each angle. Bark greyish white, smooth, with lenticels and minute blisters. Young stems hairy with brownish hairs, usually becoming hairless. Leaves alternating up the stems, 2–13 cm long, 10–70 mm wide, stiff, prominently veined, hairless, margins with very coarse angles. Male and female flowers on different plants. Flowers cream to greenish, with 4 'petals' each 1–2 mm long. Flower spikes to about 3 cm long.
