Massive erect to sprawling perennial herb to 1.8 m high. Fruit fleshy. Stem about 12 cm diameter, covered in old leaf bases. Leaves alternating up the stems, 45-90 cm long, 300-600 mm wide, glossy green, hairless. Flowers highly fragrant. Individual flowers small, with 0 petals. Male and female flowers on the same plant, in a spike, male flowers above, female flowers below, separated from the males by rudimentary flowers. Spathe 150-250 mm long, usually green, withering away. Flower spike shorter than the spathe, tapering. Fruit pink to red when ripe, the fruiting spike enclosed by the lower part of the withered spathe. Flowering: mostly early summer.
