Pastures, disturbed sites, and cultivation. Sydney area and Canberra. Occasional elsewhere.
Introduced annual herb to 2 m high. Bracts below the flowers spine tipped. Stems hairless, grooved. Leaves alternating up the stems, 1.5-15 cm long, 10-60 mm wide, margins entire, tips pointed to blunt. Male and female flowers on the same plant. Flowers green, with 5 'petals' each 1–2 mm long, bracts 2.5-4 mm long. Flowers in a cylindrical many-flowered cluster, more or less hanging down. Flowers summer to autumn.
