Weed of gardens, crops and wasteland. Widespread, mostly in Canberra and the Sydney area.
Introduced annual herb to 1.3 m high, sometimes sprawling. Stems angled or grooved, hairless to sparsely hairy, sometimes reddish. Leaves alternating up the stems, 1–10 cm long, 6–50 mm wide, margins entire, tips pointed. Male and female flowers on the same plant. Flowers green, with 3–5 'petals' each 2.5–3 mm long, longest bracts below the flowers 4-6 mm long. Flowers in many-flowered cylindrical spikes at the tops of the stems.
