Woodland. Coast, ranges, and the eastern edge of the tablelands north of Bermagui. Mostly north from Port Kembla.
Tree to 20 m high. Bark rough on all but the smallest branches, grey, fibrous to flaky. Juvenile stems rounded in cross section, hairy. Leaves aromatic when rubbed, opposite each other. Juvenile leaves 5–11 cm long, 25–50 mm wide, green, hairy, margins entire, tips pointed, bases stem-clasping. Adult leaves 6–12 cm long, 20–50 mm wide, glossy green to dull grey-green, surfaces different colours, bases often stem-clasping, margins entire or rarely finely scalloped, tips pointed to rounded. Flower clusters 3-7- flowered. Buds and gumnuts ribbed. Mature buds 4–7 mm in diameter. Flowers with 5 petals 3–4 mm long, white with a green stripe down the back. Stamens white to creamy white, longer than the petals. Flowers in 7-flowered clusters. Gumnuts 6–11 mm in diameter. Gumnuts that have dropped their seed have valves that are not very noticeable. Flowers summer.
Intergrades with Angophora floribunda are known.
