Perennial herb to 0.20 m high or sprawling. Stems 4-angled, with conspicuous ridges, more or less rough with short, curved hairs, particularly on the angles. 'Leaves' in whorls of 4-6, mostly 0.4–1 cm long, 1-3 mm wide, hairless, margins curved down and with rigid short hairs, midrib on the underside with rigid short hairs. Male and female flowers on different plants. Flowers sweet scented. Flowers with a funnel shaped tube and 3-5 white or creamy lobes. Calyx tiny. Male flowers about 3 mm long; female flowers about 2 mm long. Flowers in 2- or 3-flowered clusters. Flowering: spring-summer.
