Wet forest, often beside streams or in damp places. Sydney area and the ranges to the west.
Bushy shrub to 2 m high. Bark finely flaky. Young shoots densely hairy, becoming hairless with age. Leaves aromatic when rubbed, opposite each other, 1.5–4 cm long, 1–3 mm wide, lower surface densely hairy, becoming hairless with age, margins curved down, tips gradually tapering to a point. Flowers usually with 5 petals 2–4 mm long, white, single. Fruit purplish when immature, white with dark spots when ripe. Flowers summer.
