Disturbed and moist sites. Mainly coast, ranges, and tablelands, norrh of Kiama. ACT. Occasionally farther south.
Introduced woody annual or perennial herb to 1.6 m high. 'Seeds' with barbs mainly on the awns, sticking to clothing. Stems almost hairless. Leaves opposite each other, deeply divided, usually 5-lobed, sometimes 7-lobed, each 4–11 cm long, 30–60 mm wide, hairy on the lower surface, margins toothed or entire. Flower heads oval behind the 'petals', with yellow 'petals' and yellow to brown centres 5-10 mm in diameter. Flowering: summer–autumn.
