Woodland, shrubland, grassy areas, roadsides, disturbed areas, dunes, and wetlands. Sydney area, near Bathurst, and Western Slopes. Occasionally elsewhere.
Introduced annual herb to 0.60 m tall. Stems bristly at the base becoming hairless above. Leaves basal and alternating up the stems, 6-30 cm long, deeply lobed, bristly, particulary the lower surface. Stem leaves becoming smaller up the stems, eventually linear and bract-like. Flowers pale yellow fading to white, with 4 petals each 5–8 mm long. Flowers in clusters. Flowers Apr.–Oct. Seed cases erect, 3–7 cm long (including the beak), 2–3 mm wide; constricted between the seeds, midrib not prominent. Beak 8–20 mm long, with 1 or 2 seeds. Stalk 7–25 mm long. Seeds reddish-brown.
