Forest, woodland, grassy areas, disturbed sites, roadsides, near old habitations, rocky sites and along streams. Coastal.
Introduced perennial herb to 2.5 m high, sometimes suckering from the base. Leaves fleshy. Stems cylindrical, hairless. Leaves opposite each other or in whorls of 3, 1.5–15 cm long, 2-6 mm wide, almost cylindrical, with a shallow groove on the upper surface, leaves notched towards the tips (where plantlets are produced). Flowers pinkish-red, reddish-orange, or red, 20-40 mm long, tubular, with 4 lobes. Flowers hanging down, in a dense cluster 10-20 cm wide, at the top of a single stem. Flowering May to October.
