Where found

Dry forest, woodland, and grassy areas. Widespread, except that coastal records outside the Sydney district are rare.

Notes

Perennial herb or small shrub to 0.5 m high. 'Seeds' 1–1.5 mm long, flattened, warty, with 2 erect spines 1.3–2 mm long and 4–9 shorter spreading spines, all barbed at the tips. 'Seeds' stick to clothing. Stems sparsely hairy to bristly. Basal leaves soon withering. Stem leaves alternating up the stems, 0.4–2.5 cm long, 1–4 mm wide, surfaces rough to hairy, margins entire to deeply lobed. Flower heads 3–15 mm in diameter, becoming globular, with about 40–60 yellow 'petals' 2–4 mm long, and yellow centres. Flowering: throughout the year.

Definite identification of all species of Calotis is made by examining the seeds.
