Dry forest, woodland, shrubland and heath, grassy areas, roadsides, and along river valleys. Widespread.
Shrub to 3 m tall. Stems hairless to hairy. Leaves aromatic when rubbed, alternating up the stems or crowded, 0.1-1.5 cm long, 0.5-1 mm wide, margins often finely toothed or fringed. Flowers with 5 petals 3.5-7.5 mm long, white to pink, single, appearing as if they are in clusters. Fused sepals each 2-2.5 mm long with an awn to 17 mm long, persistent, turning red to purple after the petals fall. Flowers all year, mainly Spring.
