Rhizomatous perennial herb to 0.3 m high, sprawling, forming dense swards up to 1 m or more in diameter. Stems hairless, with conspicuous leaf scars towards the base. Basal leaves forming a rosette distinctly above ground level, to 25 cm long, compound, with 3-7 leaflets. Stem leaves 0–4, alternating up the stems, similar to the basal leaves but becoming shorter up the stem, the leaflets becoming narrower. Flowers with 4 white petals each about 8–12 mm long, and 6 stamens. Flowers in few- to many-flowered clusters. Flowers late spring to early autumn.
