Where found

Coastal. Mainly coastal dunes and coastal shrubland. Planted for control of erosion of sandy and sometimes saline soils, occasionally escaping.

Notes

Introduced prostrate perennial herb with stems to 2 m long. Stems, leaves, and fruit fleshy. Leaves opposite each other, triangular in cross section, 3.5–9 cm long, 5–12 mm thick, dull green or glaucous, sometimes slightly glossy. Flowers light purple throughout, sometimes pale near the base, but not white, 35–80 mm in diameter, with about 70–150  'petals'. Fruit purple, oval to oval, distinctly 2-angled, 15–30 mm long. Flowers Sep.–Apr.
