Dunes, sandy pastures, open woodland, and moist areas. Coastal. Not common.
Introduced prostrate perennial herb with stems to 2 m long, usually less than 0.30 m tall. Stems, leaves, and fruit fleshy. Stems hairless. Leaves 4-10 cm long, 5-17 mm wide, opposite each other, triangular in cross section, dark or dull green (often with a reddish tinge), one corner with small teeth, tips pointed. Flowers cream to yellow, white towards the base, becoming pink with age, 70-85 mm in diameter, with about 120-130 'petals'. Flowers most of the year. Fruit yellowish to reddish-purple, almost round.
