Where found

Forest, particularly near streams and in moist gullies. Coastal north of Kiama. Sydney area.

Notes

Tree to about 4 m tall in the area covered by this key. Fruit fleshy. Bark thin, smooth, with fine vertical ridges, the ridges sometimes blistered. Stems sparsely hairy, becoming hairless. Leaves alternating up the stems, 5–10 cm long, 20–45 mm wide, margins entire, toothed, or scalloped, both surfaces hairless, with fine oil dots, but not aromatic. Male and female flowers on the same plant. Flowers greenish, white, or cream, with 5 'petals'. Male flowers in branched clusters with about 30-60 flowers, each flower about 1-1.5 mm in diameter. Female flowers in clusters with about 5-10 flowers, each flower about 2 x 1 mm. Fruit purplish or blue-black to black, ripe Aug.-Mar.
