Grassy areas, disturbed sites, and roadsides. Western Slopes, Kosciuszko National Park, the mountains to the north, ACT, Tablelands, and Sydney area. Occasional elsewhere.
Introduced perennial herb to 1.3 m tall. Stems ribbed, hairy or bristly at the base. Basal leaves soon withering, 4-20 cm long, 15-50 mm wide, margins toothed or lobed, surfaces hairless, tips blunt. Stem leaves alternating up the stems, to about 10 cm long, mostly reduced and bract-like, hairless, with entire margins. Often leafless at flowering time. Flower heads with 9-15 yellow ‘petals’ 7-10 mm long. Flower heads 10-20 mm in diameter behind the 'petals', cylindrical, in clusters of 1-3. Flowers Summer to Autumn.
