Rainforest margins, and along streams. Often persists around old habitations. Coast and ranges north of Berry.
Shrub or tree to about 6 m high. Branches with stiff, stout, paired spines 2.5–30 mm long at the bases of some leaves. Stems hairless. Leaves strongly lemon-scented when rubbed, alternating up the stems, 3.5–13 cm long, 20–70 mm wide, hairless and glossy, margins more or less entire to finely or coarsely scalloped, leaf stalks slightly winged or not winged, and with a joint. Flowers sweetly scented, white, sometimes with a pinkish tinge, to 35 mm in diameter, with 4-5 petals each about 10 mm long. Flowers single or in few-flowered clusters. Fruit yellow to orange-reddish, more or less round, 35–105 mm long, 35–65 mm in diameter. Fruits winter.
