Introduced shrublike perennial herb to 1.5 m high. Stems and leaves fleshy. Leaves opposite each other, 2–4 cm long, 10–22 mm wide, green, often with red margins, the leaves of each pair united at the base to form a ridge round the stem, tips pointed or blunt with a distinct mucro. Flowers white tinged pink, with 5 petals each 5–10 mm long, shortly fused at the base. Flowers clustered. Flowers Jun.–Aug.
