Where found

Forest, woodland, grassy areas, disturbed sites, dunes, and damp places. Widespread.

Notes

Annual or perennial herb to 1 m tall. Burr with many barbed spines. Stems rough-hairy. Stems and burrs stick to clothing. Leaves basal and alternating up the stems, 2-20 cm long, 4-35 mm wide, hairy, tips pointed. Basal leaves with a sheath at the base. Upper leaves with wavy margins. Flowers slightly scented. Flowers 3-6 mm long, 2-4 mm in diameter, blue, pink, or whitish, funnel-shaped, with 5 lobes. Flowers in clusters on one side of the coiled stalk when young, the stalk soon elongating. Flowers mostly Spring to Summer. Burrs flattened on the upper surfaces.
