Dry forest, heath, and dunes. Coastal, north of Bermagui, mainly between Wollongong and Kiama. Often grows near the more slender, mat-forming Dianella congesta.
Perennial herb to 0.8 m high, tufted, rhizomatous. Tufts to 20 cm diameter at the base; roots fleshy-fibrous. Fruit fleshy, blue. Leaves arranged in two rows on opposite sides of the stem, to 70 cm long, 6–18 mm wide, basal sheaths keeled, less than half closed at the top. Flowers mid- to dark blue, with 6 'petals'. Outer 'petals' 7.5–9.5 mm long, inner 'petals' 7–8.5 mm long. Anthers pale yellow. Inflorescence longer than the leaves, the sub-clusters expanded, 5–15-flowered. Flowering: spring–summer. Fruit blue to purple, 6–8 mm long.
