Dry forest and heath. Coast and ranges. Sometimes on the tablelands.
Erect or sprawling shrub to 1.5 m tall. The ends of the branchlets often bear spines. Stems hairless. Leaves alternating up the stems, 0.1-1 cm long, about 0.5 mm wide, tips blunt, or curved and pointed, surfaces smooth or covered with minute warts, and usually hairless, margins occasionally rolled upwards. Standard petal 7-10 mm long. Flowers pea shaped, with 5 petals, 2 joined together to form the keel, yellow with red to purple markings, keel red. Calyx tapering gradually towards the base. Flowers single, at the ends od the stems or at the base of the upper leaves, appearing clustered. Flowers Winter to Spring.
In all species of Dillwynia, the standard petal is much broader than long.
