Annual or short lived perennial herb, prostrate, stems to 2 m long. Leaves fleshy, opposite each other or in clusters, 1-7 cm long, 2-10 mm thick, more or less cylindrical to obscurely triangular in cross section, with warty margins and blunt tips. Flowers 20-50 mm in diameter, purple or pink, with many 'petals'. Flowers Spring to Summer. Fruit at first red and fleshy, becoming dry and hardened.
