Alpine herbfields, grassland, wet stony and rocky areas, and margins of streams and bogs. Kosciuszko National Park.
Shrub to 0.3 m high, prostrate to sprawling, often rooting from the lower branches. Branches with prominent leaf scars. Branchlets hairless to hairy with minute hairs. Leaves crowded, usually erect, 0.18–0.4 cm long, 1.5–2.5 mm wide, thick, more or less flat, margins often rough. Plants often have a distinct reddish purple hue in the autumn. Flowers white, about 7–10 mm in diameter, with a bell-shaped tube and 5 spreading lobes. No hairs on the inside of the flowers. Sepals and bracts below the sepals conspicuous, reddish brown. Flowers in small leafy clusters. Flowering: summer.
