Stream banks and swamps. Widespread but not on the Western Slopes apart from east of Albury.
Perennial herb to over 1 m high, often with numerous leafy stolons from the base. Stems hairy, sometimes restricted to lines extending down from the leaf bases. Leaves usually opposite each other on the lower stems, alternating up the stems in the flowering region, 3–8 cm long, 4–13 mm wide, margins with sparse small teeth. Flowers with 4 purplish pink or white petals each 7.5–14 mm long. A conspicuous ring of long hairs inside the floral tube. Flowers single. Flowers mainly Oct.–Mar. Seed cases 4.5–9.5 cm long, hairy; on stalks 10–20 mm long
Definite identification of Epilobium species requires microscopic examination of the seeds.
