Perennial herb to about 1 m high, with annual stems. Stems hairless, minutely sticky hairy below the flower heads. Leaves alternating up the stems, 2–13 cm long, 3–12 mm wide, margins sometimes purplish, margins entire or the lowermost leaves toothed. Flower heads with many pale purple to white ‘petals’ in one to several rows, each 1.5–8 mm long, more or less erect. Flower heads below the ‘petals’ 3-8 mm long, 10-20 mm in diameter, hemispherical or bell-shaped. Flower heads in open clusters, appearing single. Flowering: Jan.–Apr.
