Dry forest, woodland, grassy areas, roadsides, near old habitations, and along streams. Coast and the eastern edge of the ranges.
Introduced tree to 15 m tall. Prickles on trunk and branches. Branches hairless. Leaves alternating up the stems, compound, with 3 leaflets, each 7-20 cm long, 70-120 mm wide, hairless. Standard petal 30-65 mm long. Flowers pea shaped, with 5 petals, 2 joined together to form the keel, red, in clusters of about 30 flowers. Flowers all year but mostly Winter to Spring.
