Urban bushland, open areas, roadsides, and stream banks and stream beds. Mainly ACT, the mountains to the west, and Kosciuszko National Park. Occasionally elsewhere.
Introduced annual herb to about 0.6 m high. Stems glaucous, hairless. Leaves in a rosette at the base and alternating up the stems; 2–15 cm long, 20-100 mm wide, deeply dissected and dissected again, the final segments linear, 0.5–4 mm wide. Flowers with 4 petals each 10–60 mm long, yellow to orange, occasionally red, often darker near the base, soon falling. Flowers spring – autumn.
