Where found

Tall forests and gullies in cold wet areas. Widespread. No records from the Western Slopes or the Sydney area. A few sightings, but no recent records, from Kosciuszko National Park.

Notes

Tree to 60 m tall, often buttressed at the base.  Bark rough on the trunk and larger branches, fibrous or stringy, often furrowed, grey to brown or red-brown.  Smooth bark shedding in long ribbons.  Juvenile stems rounded in cross section, usually smooth.  Juvenile leaves at first opposite each other, then alternating up the stems, 4.5- about 15 cm long, 18-90 mm wide, glossy green, margins rough or with minute teeth.  Adult leaves alternating up the stems, 7-20.5 cm long, 11-45 mm wide, usually glossy, green, upper and lower surfaces different colours.  Flowers white, with 0 petals.  Flower clusters often in pairs, each 7-15+ flowered.  Mature flower buds 3–7 mm long, caps shorter than or as long as the base.  Flowers Summer.  Gumnuts 4-8 mm in diameter. Gumnuts that have dropped their seed have protruding valves or valves that are not very noticeable.
