Where found

Tall forest. Coast and ranges north of Bermagui. Tablelands north from east of Goulburn.

Notes

Tree to 30 m tall.  Bark rough on all but the smallest branches, hard and deeply furrowed longitudinally, 'ironbark', grey to black or brownish.  Juvenile stems square in cross section.  Juvenile leaves opposite each other for about 6 pairs, then alternating up the stems, 3.5-7 cm long, 15-30 mm wide, semi-glossy, green.  Adult leaves alternating up the stems, 5-18 cm long, 12-30 mm wide, semi-glossy to glossy, green, upper and lower surfaces different colours.  Flowers white, with 0 petals.  Flower clusters 7-flowered, forming compound clusters at the ends of the branchlets, sometimes single flower clusters at the bases of the leaves near the ends of the branchlets.  Mature flower buds 5–9 mm long, caps shorter than the base.  Outer ring of stamens not producing pollen.  Flowers most of the year.  Gumnuts 4-8 mm in diameter, often weakly ribbed, sometimes almost square in cross section. Gumnuts that have dropped their seed have valves that are not very noticeable.
