Woodland, often in moist areas.
subsp. paramattensis: Coast, ranges, and Southern Highlands, north of Bowral.
var. sphaerocalyx: Near Parramatta to the foothills of the Blue Mountains.
Tree to 15 m tall. Bark smooth, becoming granular with age, shedding in large plates or flakes. Juvenile stems rounded or square in cross section. Juvenile leaves opposite each other for about 4 to 7 pairs, then alternating up the stems, 5–12 cm long, 5–30 mm wide, dull, green to blue-green. Adult leaves alternating up the stems, 7–20 cm long, 10–35 mm wide, glossy to dull, green. Flowers white, with 0 petals. Flower clusters 7 flowered. Mature flower buds 4-10 mm long, caps at least as long as the base. Flowers spring-summer. Gumnuts 4-7 mm in diameter. Gumnuts that have dropped their seed have protruding valves.

Hybrids are recorded between Eucalyptus parramattensis subsp. parramattensis and Eucalyptus longifolia, Eucalyptus resinifera subsp. resinifera and Eucalyptus punctata.
Endangered population of subsp. paramattensis in Wyong and Lake Macquarie local government areas, north of the area covered by this key.
