Wet forest. Sydney area and north.
Tree to 45 m tall. Ironbark througout or on all but the smallest branches, hard, deeply furrowed, grey to black. Juvenile stems square or cylindrical. Juvenile leaves opposite each other for 4 to 6 pairs then alternating up the stems, 5–12 cm long, 15–48 mm wide, dull to slightly glossy, green, upper and lower surfaces different colours. Adult leaves alternating up the stems, 8–17.5 cm long, 10–30 mm wide, dull or glossy, green or grey-green. Flowers white, with 0 petals. Flower clusters usually 7 flowered, forming compound clusters at the ends of the branchlets, sometimes in single clusters at the base of leaves near the tips of the branchlets. Mature flower buds 5-10 mm long, caps shorter than or as long as the base. Flowers most of the year. Gumnuts 4-7 mm in diameter. Gumnuts that have dropped their seed have protruding valves or valves that are not very noticeable.
