Grassy forest and woodland, poorly drained sites and swamps, usually at higher altitudes on the margins of frost hollows. Kosciuszko National Park, the mountains to the north, ACT, tablelands, and ranges. Occasionally Western Slopes.
Tree or mallee to 15 m tall. Bark rough on the lower trunk, shortly fibrous, compacted, grey to black. Smooth bark shedding in short ribbons. Juvenile stems rounded in cross section, often warty on the lower stem. Juvenile leaves stalkless and opposite each other for many pairs, becoming shortly stalked and alternating up the stems at about 0.5-1 m tall, 4-10 cm long, 30-60 mm wide, dull, blue-green or grey-green to green. Adult leaves alternating up the stems, 4-11 cm long, 9-32 mm wide, glossy, green. Flowers white, with 0 petals. Flower clusters 9-15 flowered, star-shaped. Mature flower buds 4–6.5 mm long, caps about as long as the base. Flowers summer-autumn. Gumnuts 3-5 mm in diameter. Gumnuts that have dropped their seed have valves that are not very noticeable.
All native plants on unleased land in the ACT are protected.
