Introduced deciduous tree to 20 metres high. Bark smooth and grey on young trees, becoming thick and fissured with age. Winter buds reddish-brown, with a velvety texture. Leaves opposite each other, 15–30 cm long, with 5–11 leaflets each 5–18 cm long, 12–90 mm wide, margins entire to to slightly toothed above the middle, tips pointed, both surfaces deep green. Leaves turn yellow in autumn. Male and female flowers on different plants. Flowers small, with 0 petals, in compact branched clusters. Flowering: Spring, at the same time as the new leaves. 'Seeds' brown when mature, with one wing, 2.5–7.5 cm overall.
