Weed of disturbed ground. Mainly coast, ranges, and the eastern edge of the tablelands. Occasionally elsewhere.
Introduced annual or biennial herb to 0.4 m high. Stems with a white felty tomentum. Basal leaves in a rosette, 2.5–7 cm long, 8–16 mm wide, upper surface green, with a distinctly paler furrowed midvein, lower surface white-tomentose, tips blunt, bases slightly stem-clasping, margins sometimes wavy. Stem leaves alternating up the stems, similar to the basal leaves, 1–6 cm long. Flower heads 2–3 mm in diameter. Bracts tightly surrounding the flower heads hairless, green below, pale and chaffy above, purple in between. Flower heads forming a dense spike-like cluster. Flowering: mainly Dec.–Jan.
