Shrub to 2 m high. Fruit fleshy. Young stems rough, with reddish brown, bristly, more or less appressed hairs, sometimes overlying very short, fine, curled hairs. Leaves alternating up the stems, 3–9 cm long, 10–30 mm wide, hairless, but often bristly along the veins, margins finely toothed. Flowers white to pale pink, 2.5–5 mm long, urn-shaped, tubular, with 5 lobes, in clusters of 3–11 flowers. Flowering: late spring to summer. Fruiting sepals white, fleshy and largely fused, forming a berry-like structure 8–10 mm in diameter, enclosing the dry seed case.
