Perennial herb to 0.15 m high or prostrate, mats to 40 cm diameter. Stems 4-angled, thin and wiry, hairy to sparsely hairy with short appressed hairs. Leaves opposite each other, 0.35–1 cm long, 2–6 mm wide, leathery, margins thickened, and with 4–6 teeth, surfaces sparsely hairy with short appressed hairs, becoming hairless. Flowers with 4 hooded petals 1–1.8 mm long, 4 stamens producing pollen, and 4 stamens not producing pollen. Flowers in spike-like clusters. Seed cases grey, oval, about 1.5 mm long, 8-ribbed, often with 2 oblique thickened regions between the ribs. (needs a hand lens or a macro app on your phone/tablet to see).
