Dry forest and woodland. Coast, ranges, and tablelands. Occasionally elsewhere.
Erect perennial herb or shrub to 0.9 m high. Stems 4-angled; rough, sparsely to densely hairy with spreading coarse hairs. Leaves opposite each other, 0.5–2.2 cm long, 3–13 mm wide, margins thickened, and with 10–12 small teeth. Flowers with 4 whitish or green to red hooded petals each 2.6–3.3 mm long, and 8 stamens. Flowers in spike-like clusters. Flowers Oct.–Jan. Seed cases silver-grey, oval, about 1.5 mm long, 8-ribbed with 2 or 3 oblique hard protuberances between the ribs (needs a hand lens or a macro app on your phone/tablet to see).
