Perennial herb to 0.7 m high. Stems almost hairless or hairless. Leaves mostly basal, 5–25 cm long, 1–12 mm wide, thick, hairless, usually glossy, tips pointed or blunt, margins entire or toothed. Flowers yellow, 10–15 mm long, tubular, the tube split to the base, with 5 lobes, 2-lipped. Flowers almost stalkless except sometimes the lowest flowers, in clusters on almost leafless scapes. Flowering: mainly August–February. Seeds elliptic, about 1.5 mm long, brown.
