Forest, disturbed sites, and moist gullies. Widespread, except for no records from the Western Slopes.
Shrub or tree to 4 m tall. Stems hairy to hairless. Leaves alternating up the stems, compound, with 3 leaflets, each 0.5-3.5 cm long, 3-30 mm wide, hairless or hairy. Flowers yellow, with red to purple, almost black, markings, 9-14 mm long, pea shaped, with 5 petals, 2 joined together to form the keel, in clusters 4 to about 14 cm long. Flowers Spring.
